Kicking Sugar Cravings with Mesquite
Posted by Belinda Sutton onAfter indulging in a few too many sweet treats over the holidays (both healthy and naughty), we've been struggling with pesky sugar cravings, especially in the afternoons!
So we decided on this rainy Sunday afternoon to prepare ourselves for the week ahead in the battle against the sweet-tooth by creating these protein packed balls sweetened only with Mesquite.
Mesquite is a Native American superfood with a deliciously sweet and caramel like flavour, however it's Lo-GI, working to stabilise blood sugar levels, satisfying a sweet craving without the sugar spike and resultant crash we've all experienced! Mesquite is also high in protein and a great source of minerals including calcium, iron and zinc, and is the perfect addition to smoothies, amazing paired with cacao.
Bring on 3pm...we've got this craving covered with our Hemp and Mesquite Protein Balls!
Hemp & Mesquite Protein Balls:
1 cup macadamias
1 cup almonds
1/2 cup shredded coconut
1/4 cup hemp seeds
1/4 cup sesame seeds
1/4 cup mesquite powder
1 tbsp cinnamon
Small pinch himalayan rock salt
2 tbsp unhulled tahini
1/2 cup coconut oil
1tsp pure vanilla extract
Makes 20 balls
1. In food processor combine all dry ingredients, until mixture is fine and crumbly
2. Add tahini, coconut oil and vanilla and process until mixture starts to combine
3. Leave in fridge for 20 mins, then take a tablespoon of mixture and gently roll into balls. We like to mix it up and roll our balls in hemp seeds, coconut, sesame or cinnamon
